Sheena Meade Says District 46 Needs New Blood, Will Challenge Bruce Antone

Orlando area student, activist, and mother, Sheena Meade, filed to run for Florida House District 46. In a quest that would make her the youngest African-American woman in central Florida elected to the Florida House of Representatives this year. Sheena Meade seeks to MEADE_logounseat incumbent Representative Bruce Anton, and inject a new and energetic presence in the Florida House.

Born into a labor union family, she learned early on the importance of having the right to be paid a living wage, having adequate health insurance, and the importance of paid sick leave. Relying on her 20 plus years of experience as an activist and community organizer, Sheena Meade will draw from her experience of being a teenage mother to four sons, one daughter and being a wife that has overcome obstacles. Sheena Meade is married to an ex-con, who became an attorney, who is leading the efforts to restore voting rights to disenfranchised Floridians. Sheena Meade has a thorough understanding of the impact that disfranchisement policies have that hinder successful reentry into the community, especially when it comes to housing and employment.

Recognizing the role criminal justice reform can play in increasing public safety, and that a significant number of District 46 residents face these challenges on a daily basis. She hopes to make the public’s frustration with “same old” politics dominated by the “same old” elected officials to infuse new ideas and energy into the Florida House of Representatives.

Meade’s points of emphasis during the campaign will include:  a renewed focus on early childhood education, a common sense approach to increasing home ownership within the district, a more hands-on role in supporting classroom teachers, and ensuring that we prioritize school spending directly on students and classrooms. Meade feels passionate about creating a positive influence and opportunities in the lives of the young people of District 46.
