Florida’s agriculture commissioner says a severe drought across much of the state is creating an explosive situation.
Agriculture Commissioner Charles Bronson said Tuesday the state has already recorded twice the wildfire activity of a year ago.
He said Florida has had 1,024 wildfires that burned 24,730 acres since Jan. 1, compared with 508 fires over 11,292 acres at the same time last year.
Because the lightning season has yet to begin, nearly all of the fires this year were caused by humans and were therefore avoidable.
