Senator Rick Scott introduced his Coast Guard Improvement Act to establish a Secretary of the Coast Guard, which will oversee Coast Guard operations and report directly to the Secretary of Homeland Security.
According to the Florida Senator, this will allow the U.S. Coast Guard to adapt to its ever-evolving mission and challenges, enhance strategic oversight, secure U.S. waters, and support America’s national security defense. Senator Shelley Moore Capito is a cosponsor.
“The establishment of a Secretary of the Coast Guard is an important step in ensuring our nation’s maritime security is led with the strength and efficiency it deserves to ensure it can fulfill its mission and adapt to any challenges,” Republican Senator Rick Scott said. “President Trump has built a strong national defense team with incredible leaders committed to protecting and serving our nation and American families. It’s critical to have a dedicated Secretary for the U.S. Coast Guard working closely with President Trump, our military leaders, and the Department of Homeland Security for a coordinated, successful effort to keep the nation safe.”
The Coast Guard is America’s premier maritime law enforcement agency. Coast Guard ships, aircraft, boats and nearly 55,000 military members and civilian employees protect economic prosperity and national security.
“The men and women of the U.S. Coast Guard—including those at our four important facilities in West Virginia–work incredibly hard and on many different fronts to keep Americans safe and help ensure our nation is secure,” Senator Shelley Moore Capito said. “Creating a Coast Guard Secretary position, just like the other branches of the armed forces, will help streamline the important work that our Coast Guard undertakes every day.”
