Senator Bernie Sanders endorsed Democrat Josh Weil in the upcoming Florida congressional special election, who is running against Trump-endorsed Republican Randy Fine.
As Democrats cheered on the national endorsement, Republicans quickly made “socialist” political attacks and warned voters about the anti-Trump Democratic candidate.
“Josh Weil is a working class father of two and a middle school teacher who knows what it’s like to live paycheck to paycheck. Unlike his opponent, he does not have any billionaire-backed Super PACs supporting him. Josh would be a voice in Congress who understands why we must protect Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid and not give massive tax breaks to billionaires,” Senator Bernie Sanders said in a statement. “He understands that we have to keep our promise to veterans, wants to expand the trade union movement and believes that all kids deserve a quality education. As the longest serving Independent in Congress, I am confident that he will be a grassroots champion for Florida’s working class, and I am proud to endorse him.”
Senator Bernie Sanders endorsed Josh Weil in the race to represent FL-06 in Congress, adding his endorsement to leaders across the Democratic Party including Rep. Ro Khanna, Rep. Mark Pocan, and Rep. Ted Lieu.
The upcoming special election will replace former Republican Congressman Michael Waltz, who resigned to serve as President Donald Trump’s National Security Advisor.
Randy Fine, Republican candidate for Florida’s 6th Congressional District, quickly reacted following Bernie Sanders’ endorsement of his opponent Josh Weil for Congress.
“It’s no surprise Bernie Sanders has endorsed socialist Josh Weil with just days to go before Election Day on April 1st,” said Republican Randy Fine. “Like the anti-Trump Democrats who have poured millions of dollars into this race, Bernie Sanders doesn’t care what violent and disturbing things Josh Weil has done — they only care about what he will do once he’s in Congress. And socialist Josh Weil will do anything to grind President Trump’s agenda to a halt.”
In addition to Bernie Sanders endorsing in the Florida special election, Orlando progressive Congressman Maxwell Frost also endorsed Josh Weil. Rep. Frost has been vocal about “the need to fight back against Donald Trump and unelected oligarch Elon Musk.”
“We’ve said this since the beginning — the contrast between myself and socialist Josh Weil cannot be more clear,” Republican Randy Fine added. “While I will fight tirelessly in Congress for President Trump and his America First agenda, my opponent will lock arms with socialists Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Bernie Sanders to recklessly open our borders, cripple Florida families with trillions of dollars in new spending and tax increases, and put our families in the crosshairs of dangerous criminals and deadly drugs. I’m endorsed by President Donald J. Trump and Josh Weil is endorsed by socialist Bernie Sanders — the taxpayers of the Sixth District should vote accordingly.”
Randy Fine also recently called his Democratic opponent’s campaign “a $10 million scam.” Ahead of Tuesday’s special congressional election in Florida, Democratic National Committee Chair Ken Martin is joining FDP Chair Nikki Fried on the ground in Congressional District 6 as Democrats try to pull off a surprise victory against President Donald Trump and Republicans.
