A Florida Senate committee has voted to let doctors prescribe “non-euphoric” strains of marijuana for patients who suffer from seizures or cancer pain, after receiving testimony from patients.
Sponsored by Senators Bean (R-Fernandina Beach), Jeff Brandes (R-St. Petersburg) and Rob Bradley (R-Orange Park), the bill will tightly control the use of an oil derivative of marijuana that contains no more than 0.5% THC – the element that gives pot smokers a high.
The bill is now on its way to the Senate Appropriations Committee, with a companion bill in the House.
Meanwhile, in November, Floridians will vote on a marijuana constitutional amendment on the general election ballot, brought forward by public petition. If the ballot receives the required 60% popular vote, the Legislature will be tasked with implementing the legislation in 2015.
