Seminole Heath Department Recognized for Quality Breastfeeding Program

The International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners® (IBLCE®) and International Lactation Consultant Association® (ILCA®) have recognized Florida Department of Health, Seminole County for excellence in lactation care.

The Florida Department of Health in Seminole County has received the IBCLC Care Award in recognition for staffing professionals who hold the prestigious International Board Certified Lactation Consultant® certification (IBCLC®) and providing a lactation program that is available 2-5 days a week for breastfeeding families. In addition, the facility demonstrated that they have provided recent breastfeeding training for medical staff that care for new families, and have recently completed activities that help protect, promote, and support breastfeeding.

“This is a very important certification for Florida Department of Health in Seminole County.” said Dr. Swannie Jett, Health Officer “Encouraging breastfeeding is a no brainer”, Jett said “Breast milk is easier to digest and helps to fight disease thereby improving the chances for a healthier baby.”

The Florida Department of Health in Seminole County WIC Program’s primary goal is to provide participants with access to breastfeeding services. The program ranks in the top 5 counties in the state for initiation rates and strives to ensure participants continue to nurse their babies through their 1st year or longer as recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics. Currently, over 83% of Seminole County WIC Program participants initiate breastfeeding.
