Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida continues to support hunger relief efforts in the areas hit hardest by Hurricane Helene.
As a member of the Feeding Florida and Feeding America networks, Second Harvest is often called upon to help respond in the wake of a natural disaster, such as a hurricane – and is sending thousands of MREs (Meals Ready-to-Eat) to help families in Georgia.
On Wednesday morning, October 2nd, a truck picked up 500 Abbott disaster relief packs from Second Harvest to be transported west along I4 to Feeding Tampa Bay. Each pack is designed to meet a family’s immediate nutritional needs for three days and does not require warming or refrigeration.
The packs contain Abbott nutrition products, such as nutritional bars, Ensure and PediaSure nutrition drinks for adults and children, and Pedialyte rehydration solutions. An additional 500 Abbott disaster relief packs went to Second Harvest of the Big Bend on Tuesday, October 1st.
As part of long-standing disaster preparedness efforts, Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida, the global healthcare company Abbott and Feeding America partner at the start of hurricane season each year to store “disaster relief packs” with donated Abbott nutrition products.
These packs are now being distributed to affected communities, providing a first wave of immediate relief from Second Harvest following Hurricane Helene.
Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida is a private, nonprofit organization that collects, stores and distributes donated food to more than 750 feeding partners in Brevard County, Lake County, Marion County, Orange County, Osceola County, Seminole County, and Volusia County.
