Daytona Beach Police are searching for two male suspect who scammed a 74-year-old man out of thousands of dollars.

Here’s how the scam works:

One male suspect approached the elderly man who was shopping in a Dollar General Store around 12:00 noon on Wednesday.  The suspect stated that he had $80,000 to give to charity and that’s when the second suspect came up to the 74-year-old man and continued the conversation about the gift.

The second suspect claimed he also wanted to contribute to charity and the elderly man drove both to a nearby Bank of America, where one of the suspects withdrew a wad of cash. The suspects then asked the victim for his contribution.

According to police, the victim drove to his residence and removed $28,000 from his safe and gave it to the suspects. The elderly man was expecting to receive $10,000 in addition to the $28,000 of his own money he had handed over to the two suspects, investigators said.

The elderly man was then given a closely tied bag by the suspects, which was supposed to contain all the money and he returned it to his safe.

The 74-year-old man then drove the suspects to the 1000 block of Mason Avenue and dropped them off.

Police said, when he returned home and searched the bag, it contained rolled up newspaper.

The name of the victim has not been released.

Daytona Beach detectives are asking for the public’s help in identifying these two suspects.

If in contact with anyone matching the description of the two suspects, please complete a detailed FIC, including thumbprint, and immediately contact Detective J. Ziehl at (386) 671-5211 [email protected] or if after hours, the on call CID Sergeant.
