Governor Rick Scott signed legislation Wednesday that would cut vehicle registration fees for Floridians.
Scott said, the bill rolls back many of the 2009 tax increases on annual motor vehicle registrations and would result in annual savings of $25 for a typical motor vehicle. That amounts to cuts of $400 million annually.
However, many people in Florida would not benefit initially from the reduced vehicle registration fees. Nearly 600,000 have purchased 2-year stickers since September 2013 and won’t be up for renewal until 2015 and 2016. And they won’t be getting refunds.
Scott said he sent a letter to county tax collectors urging them to inform people renewing their registration before September 1st, to only pay for one year.
Scott, who has been critical of his Democratic gubernatorial opponent, then governor Charlie Crist, for increasing taxes and fees to the tune of $2.2 billion in 2009, to close a budget gap, over-looked the fact that the tax package was solidly backed by the Republican-led legislature.
