The Displaced Homemakers Program for 37 years has helped mostly women seeking jobs after being out of the workforce for long periods. But now, most of its 18 locations will shut down, including Crossroads at Palm Beach State College, which served 133 women this year, and Wings at Broward College, which served 180.
Gov. Rick Scott vetoed a $1.8 million allocation for the program, saying it duplicated job-training services available in other programs. Palm Beach State’s program plans to end Aug. 30, while Broward’s program officially ended Sunday, the last day of the fiscal year.
