Gov. Rick Scott signed into law on Monday, a bill that legalizes a strain of marijuana to treat conditions such as epilepsy, Lou Gehrig’s disease and cancer.
Scott, who is opposed to legalizing medical marijuana said, he signed to because as a “father and grandfather, you never want to see kids suffer.”
Known as Charlotte’s Web, the new law makes it legal to dispense the strain of marijuana, low in THC and high in cannabidiol, or CBD, to certain patients who suffer seizures.
“The approval of Charlotte’s Web will ensure that children in Florida who suffer from seizures and other debilitating illnesses will have the medication needed to improve their quality of life,” Scott said in a statement.
In January 2015, physicians would be able to start dispensing the marijuana strain, although they would first have to register in the state-run “compassionate use registry.”
