Scott Favors his Teacher Pay Hike Proposal More

With both chambers of the Legislature proposing differing plans to increase teacher pay, Gov. Rick Scott said Wednesday said he still backs his initial offer of an across-the-board $2,500 hike.

“I like my approach,” Scott told reporters. “The right thing to do is the $2,500 pay raise, across the board for all our teachers.”

The House plan would allocate $676 million to the school districts to use on priorities — money that lawmakers clearly want to go largely to salary increases.

The budget also encourages districts to base at least half of those raises on performance.

The Senate proposal would specify that districts use $480 million for teacher raises.

But the upper chamber would require the model that districts use for the raises to be “based on student achievement” and submitted to the State Board of Education for approval.
