With an excess supply of commercial and residential property in the state, Gov. Rick Scott and the Cabinet on Tuesday approved a development plan for more than 5,000 acres in Volusia County after the Florida Department of Community Affairs (DCA) reversed its opposition under a new administration.
The “Restoration” development plan covers 5,187 acres in Edgewater west of Interstate 95. A new land-use category created for the property would allow up to 8,500 housing units and up to 3.3 million square feet of commercial and office space.
In December, then-DCA Secretary Tom Pelham determined that the proposed “Restoration” development in Edgewater was not in compliance with state growth management laws. But on Tuesday, all that was reversed with Scott and his Cabinet approving the development plan without any discussion.
