Schools to get Millions for Improving Student Achievement

The Orange County Public Schools is set to receive some $23.7 million in grant funding under the Race to the Top Grant Initiative and according to a statement from the School Board, these funds will be used to help improve student achievement, teacher effectiveness, and provide intensive support for the lowest performing schools in the District.

On Tuesday, the School Board approved an application for submission to the Florida Department of Education for the funds and according the School Board officials, all activities will align with the District’s strategic plan, One Vision, One Voice.

Among the activities to be targeted are:

  • Improvements in student achievement through school improvement and reform
  • Data systems to track progress and improvement from pre-k to college and viable careers
  • Improvements in teacher effectiveness
  • Equal distribution of qualified teachers for all students
  • Interventions and intensive support for the lowest performing schools in the District

The allocation for OCPS under Race to the Top totals $23,659,585.  In August, Florida was awarded some $700 million in the second round of funding under the Initiative, financed under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).
