Governor Sanford had gone missing for several days earlier this year and it was believed that he went hiking on the Appalachian Trail. As it turned out, Sanford had in fact traveled to South American to visit, Maria Belen Chapur, with whom he admitted subsequently to having an affair.
According to Sanford, the affair with the Argentinian had “began very innocently”, but that over the past year, “it developed into something more than that.” He offered a public apology, admitting that he had hurt his wife, his 4 children and friends.
The complaint filed by the First Lady, indicates that the “defendant has engaged in a sexual relationship with a woman”.
