Sanford Middle, Oviedo High School Students Claim Top Awards in State Science Fair

The annual State Science and Engineering Fair of Florida (SSEF) was held April 3-5 at The Lakeland Center in Lakeland Florida.  Now into its 57th year, the SSEF is supported by the Florida Foundation for Future Scientists (FFFS), a statewide, non-profit organization approved by the 1957 Legislature to recognize scientific and technical research in Florida schools and to support and promote careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Nirva Vassa - Winner - Junior Division Grand Award

The Fair exhibited over 865 projects with over 925 students involved. Junior Section includes students from grades 6-8 and Senior Section includes students from grades 9-12. Seminole County had 29 projects enter, 14 juniors and 15 seniors. There were 36 students that participated in the fair. Of the 36 students, 29 were recognized in some manner.

The winner of the Junior Division Grand Award (Dr. Nelson Ying Scholars Grand Award) was Nirva Vassa from Sanford Middle School. Nirva’s science teacher is Mrs. Kim Coleman and the title of her project was: I Got C: A Stability Study of Vitamin C in Sonicated Fresh Orange Juice under Deaeration using Titration. In addition to being the Grand Prize Award winner, Nirva won $100 cash for the Dr. Benjamin Cole award, a plaque and a $500 cash award from the Dr. Nelson Ying Foundation and a recommendation to the Broadcom MASTERS competition.

The winner of the Senior Division Grand Award (Dr. Nelson Ying Scholars Grand Award) was Neel Patel from Oviedo High School. Neel’s science teacher is Mrs. P.J. Kreahling and the title of his project was: A Psychological Analysis of Sonification Comprehension: A 4th Year Study. As part of the Grand Award winner, Neel won a $100 from the Florida Association of Science Supervisors, a certificate from the American Psychological Association, a $25 from the Brevard: Intercostal Regional Science and Engineering Fair, a $20,000 nomination for a Cram Scholarship at Rollins College and a $1,000 and a trip to the International Science and Engineering Fair in Pittsburgh, PA.

Besides the two first place Grand Prize winners, Seminole County had other student and projects recognized. There were three Second places, four Third places, seven Fourth places, one Honor mention and six Recognitions. Seminole County won over $2,125 in actual cash awards.

Students will be recognized at the May 22, 2012 School Board Meeting.
