SALUTING VETS: KOREAN WAR HERO LEADS PARADE

Mayor Buddy Dyer and his Veterans Advisory Council will honor the courageous men and women of our armed forces by hosting the Orlando Veterans Day Parade on Saturday, November 13, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. in Downtown Orlando.

The City’s Veterans Day Parade offers a unique and patriotic opportunity for the Central Florida community to honor our men and women in the armed forces.  The parade kicks off with a tribute to those who fought for our country and defended our freedom in led by Mayor Buddy Dyer and local veterans.

This year’s grand marshal is Paul G. Hay.  Mr. Hay fought as a Navy Corpsman and Fleet Marine in the Korean War from 1947 to 1953.  He has been a member of the Mayor’s Veterans Advisory Council and coordinating the Veterans Day Parade since 1999.  Mr. Hay began his service as Chairman of the council in 2005.  Under his direction, the council coordinates 10 events each year to honor our veterans and active military.

The City of Orlando has also partnered with the United Service Organization (USO) to collect prepaid phone cards starting on November 15 through December 3.  Cards of all denominations can be dropped off at the security desk in the rotunda of City Hall (400 South Orange Avenue).  The collected cards will be shipped by the USO to troops overseas.

WHO:
The parade will consist of a variety of participants including: men and women from more than 150 Central Florida veterans’ organization, active duty military, high school marching bands and JROTCs, City of Orlando firefighters and police officers and floats that were featured in the Gasparilla parade in Tampa.

WHEN:
Saturday, November 13th
The opening ceremony will begin at 10:45 a.m.
The parade will begin at 11:00 a.m.

WHERE:
The Opening Ceremony will take place at Orange Avenue and Central Boulevard.
The Veterans Day Parade will take place in Downtown Orlando, beginning at Livingston Street and Orange Avenue, turning left on Central Boulevard, left on Rosalind Avenue and ending at Livingston Street.

Parking is available throughout Downtown and a detailed map of locations can be found at cityoforlando.net.
