Rollins, Winter Park Chamber Surpass Food Goal

Sodexo USA, Rollins College, and the Winter Park Chamber of Commerce recently partnered to collect food and donations to benefit Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida. Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida is a nonprofit organization that collects, stores and distributes donated food to more than 500 partner agencies in Central Florida. The group raised 21,747 pounds — surpassing its 20,000 pound goal.

All non-perishable food items donated, support the Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida. In 2009, 741,900 people in our area received food assistance—this is a 152 percent increase from 2006. In any given week, approximately 55,000 different people receive emergency food assistance.

With a growing local need, Rollins’ goal this year was to collect 20,000 pounds of non-perishable food to help those in our local community. Last year Rollins College collected a total of 16,201 pounds of food.

“This is the fourth year we’ve partnered with Rollins College and the Winter Park Chamber to raise money and food for Second Harvest,” said Gerard Short, Sodexo USA area general manager for Florida. “When we started four years ago we collected almost 4,000 pounds — so the outreach and effort has definitely expanded and we thank the students, faculty, staff and business and community leaders who donated to this worthy cause.”
