Rick Scott is Florida’s Next Governor

Democrat Alex Sink, at a news conference on Wednesday, conceded the Florida governor’s race to Republican Rick Scott, telling her supporters that there was “no path to victory for the Democrats”, in perhaps the closest governor’s contest and most costly in the state.  Scott won the race with 49 percent of the vote to Sink’s 48 percent.

Sink in conceding defeat said that she told Scott in a telephone conversation that he would have to work hard for all the people in the state as 2.5 millions Floridians did not vote for him.

With her voice almost breaking at times, Sink said she was humbled by the overwhelming support she had received and thanked the more than 1 million volunteers that had made telephone calls to voters over the past three weeks.   She also expressed appreciation to the many who gave of “their time, money, toil, sweat and tears for a successful campaign”, along with the seventeen editorial boards that had endorsed her candidacy.

It is not clear yet whether Sink will return to the private sector from whence she came, before giving up the position as Florida’s Chief Financial Officer to run for governor.

Sink concluded her news conference by telling supporters, “I’ve lived a long time and I have a perspective and have seen lots of ups and downs.   I know that because of my stage in life that every morning we will wake up to a new day and to another day…The sun is shining on Florida and my greatest hope is the sun will continue to do so.”
