WTF? Coach Jenkins was trying to get some understanding from officials Saturday. KARSCEAL TURNER/WONO

Thanksgiving was a good look. I added a good 30 pounds to my narrow waist line, I laughed at shoppers who braved long lines trying to cash in on Black-Friday discounts, and I even laughed at the Coast Carolina Chanticleers mascot name and had a great belly-laugh when I saw their band fill into half a section on the visitor’s side of Municipal.

Friends, my laughter was turned against me as I saw call after call go against the home team in the worst display of reverse home-cooking I have ever witnessed. The objective side of the argument says B-CU’s missed opportunities cost them the game but Hey, I’m just telling you what I saw and the things these ears heard. This particular rant ain’t sanctioned by B-CU nor the NCAA.

Picture someone cooking a fantastic Thanksgiving spread for you, traveling 433 miles from Conway, S.C. and arriving at your house only to dump the supper on your front steps. This is the debacle these eyes saw.

B-CU never got out of the funk

B-CU was off to another sluggish offensive start and the defense didn’t get revved to jump-start the offense. In fact, B-CU racked up 10 penalties for 108 yards. The result was a 24-14 drop-kick out of these 2012 playoffs. I’m telling you, those weren’t the same dudes who kicked FAMU to sleep one week ago. The loss snapped a seven game winning streak for the Wildcats. Worse it reminded us that this is the second time in three years B-CU was eliminated them from postseason competition in the opening round. Seriously, I was hoping for better.

Sike! B-CU receiver K.J. Stroud made a spectacular catch in the back of the endzone…It was ruled incomplete. KARSCEAL TURNER/WONO

Head Coach Brian Jenkins had to be restrained by his staff because of some of that total B.S. happening on the field. Here is his account of a call Saturday.

“We had our guys go from a 2 point stand to a 3 point stand and they called us for a false start.  None of our guys jumped.  Two officials called offsides and one called illegal shift.  When I asked for an explanation I got three different answers. Offensively, we just didn’t put enough points on the board. That’s the bottom line. “I’m proud of my guys and the season that we had,” he said.

Yeh yeh coach. That was pretty classy sir.

I’m going to say what you are restrained from saying. Those calls were piss poor. Bloody Hell!

Chanticleer: A proud and fierce rooster who dominates the barnyard…(in this case a yard full of cats).

We sure as hell know what a Chanticleer is now, I’ll tell you what. Coastal drew first blood when Marcus Whitener scored from 14 yards out on an option play ran to perfection by Amaris Hillary for a 7-0 advantage at the end of the first quarter. Coastal continued to score in the second quarter as Matt Hazel out-jumped two B-CU Defensive backs for a three-yard score and 14-0 lead. At this time fans weren’t yet worried. Another quick field goal made it 17-0 Chanticleers at the half.

Like I stated earlier, missing was B-CU’s trademark defensive spark to get the Offense revved up because Quentin Williams looked like he was in a Bloody trance. I expected better but I have to realize this is the man’s first collegiate playoff game after all. He will be back.

Is this for real??? The look on B-CU Drum Major Louis Owens’ face asks a question. KARSCEAL TURNER/WONO

Williams went 8 for 18 and 215 yards passing with 1 TD and had 13 rushes for 37 yards although he got pulled in favor of Broderick Waters who had a 56-yard rush to the CCU 11 to bring B-CU to life in the third quarter although the Cats didn’t score until the fourth.

Coastal’s defense locked down and forced the Cats to send in Sven Hurd on to kick a 22-yard field. He was good for the kick However but a false start and followed by an unsportsmanlike penalty pushed the Wildcats back to the 26. (Here, you may insert another doo-doo dish for questionable refereeing).

Hey, I was there. You could dig the atmosphere. I heard lots of expletives our children need not hear (except from us). Further insult ensued.

On the following play after the penalties, the Wildcats decided to go for it and Waters hit KJ Stroud in the back of the end zone. The stadium exploded. But hold up, after official review, Stroud was ruled to have his hand touch first out of bounds. The turnover gave Coastal the ball to start the fourth quarter

B-CU didn’t play enough inspired football to advance out of the first round of the playoffs this time but They’ll get over this hump. The loss ends B-CU’s season. Coastal Carolina plays at Old Dominion next Saturday in the second round of the FCS playoffs.

Coastal Carolina’s band had the last laugh. KARSCEAL TURNER/WONO

Before I get out of here, allow me to point out some positives. Defensively, Jarkevis Fields was good for a game-high 15 tackles to lead the Cats, followed by Nick Addison with 10 tackles, a fumble recovery and an interception.  Your boy Dawud Lane added eight tackles and a sack and Harold Love III and Tavarus Dantzler each added eight stops. Offensively, your boy Isidore Jackson, who needed just 8 yards rushing to reach 1,000 on the season, finished the contest with 77 yards on the ground 1 TD, and 1,069 on the year.  Jackson’s 1,069 yards represents the 3rd best rushing season in BCU history.

In terms of football offerings, B-CU faithful were served dry turkey and week old fixings. It was a Thanksgiving meal we could’ve done without. Moving forward, stay tuned for my HBCU Auxiliary dancer feature this week and dig me for basketball season with B-CU and the Orlando Magic cause the name of the column is I Got Next!

  1. I can’t call BCC – B-CU! Talk to me about scholarly exploits and then we can have a conversation. Is Black History a mandatory course at the college etc…? The football season ended but educational empowerment lasts a life-time. How many of these athletes will graduate with a marketable degree. Turner-good coverages! Peace & Love! ^-^
