Repeal of Red Light Law Greenlighted Again

Rep. Rob Schenck said there will be another effort in the Legislature this year to repeal the law that created a uniform red light camera ticketing system for the state, and in the process gave the statewide OK for their use.

Supporters of repealing the law came up short last session in trying to undo what was done just a session before, when lawmakers created a $158 fine for motorists caught running a red light by a camera.

Schenck, R-Spring Hill, told Hernando Today that he wouldn’t sponsor the repeal because he will have his hands full as a committee chair, but said the measure would be filed again.

“One of two things is going to happen. Either at some point we’re going to repeal this ridiculous law, which I hope to do,” Schenck told Hernando Today. “Or we are going to (take away) the incentives for municipalities to put these cameras up by taking away all the revenue or making it costly to do so.”

Currently, the state and local communities split the revenue from the tickets.

The repeal bill, filed by Rep. Mike Corcoran, R-New Port Richey, passed by two votes in the House earlier this year, but failed to pass the Senate.

Schenck acknowledged that Senate passage would continue to be difficult.
