Progress Energy, FPL could Slap Consumers with Higher Rates

The state Public Service Commission finished hearing arguments Wednesday about Progress Energy Florida’s request to pass along about $140 million in costs to customers next year for nuclear projects.

The commission is expected to decide Oct. 24 whether to grant Progress’ request, along with a $196 million nuclear-cost request by Florida Power & Light.

The Progress hearing started Tuesday and focused on the utility’s plan to build two nuclear reactors in Levy County.

If approved, the Progress proposal would cost $4.65 a month for residential customers who use 1,000 kilowatt hours of electricity. About $135 million of the request would help pay for early stages of the Levy County project, while the rest would be used for an already-existing nuclear plant at Crystal River.

FPL’s request focuses on upgrading already-existing plants in Miami-Dade and St. Lucie counties. The commission held a hearing last week on that proposal, which would cost $2.09 a month for residential customers who use 1,000 kilowatt hours of electricity.
