Seminole County Solid Waste, the League of Women Voters of Seminole County, and PureCycle Technologies, Inc. are partnering to collect and recycle hundreds of plastic political campaign signs after the primary election.
Now through September 3rd, candidates and residents may drop off political campaign yard signs for free recycling at the Central Transfer Station in Longwood. PureCycle will then recycle the signs into a resin that can be repurposed and reused.
Campaign yard signs are not accepted in regular curbside recycling bins. They are made from #5 plastic (polypropylene), a difficult and costly material to recycle, causing them to typically end up in landfills.
PureCycle’s process separates contaminants, odors, and colors from polypropylene and transforms it into a sustainable, ultra-pure recycled resin that can be reused multiple times, closing the loop on #5 plastic waste.
A second collection will be held in November for Election Day signs.
Campaign sign recycling drop-offs in Seminole County are available through Tuesday, September 3rd at Central Transfer Station, 1950 S.R. 419, Longwood. It will be open 7:30am–5:30pm, Monday–Saturday and closed Sunday.
Orange County also launched a recycling drive for campaign signs, with locations around Orlando and Winter Park.
