Police: Homeowner shoots dead robbery suspect

 

Gun_Police_Tape_Generic_20081017110341_640_480A homeowner in Winter Haven shot dead a robbery suspect on Monday morning, Winter Haven Police said.

The shooting happened in the 4200 block of Lake Marianna Drive, in Winter Haven, just before 7:00 a.m.

Luis Pena, the homeowner, told investigators he heard what sounded like someone entering the rear portion of the residence and upon investigating the noise, found a man rattling the french doors leading off a back porch.

Pena said, he retrieved a firearm and fired a warning shot to scare off the intruder, but the man continued into the residence.

Two other residents in the home armed themselves and additional shots were fired, with at least one hitting the burglary suspect.

The dead man has been identified as 40-year-old Mitchell G. Large, a white male.

It is not yet clear how many shots were fired.

The investigation is ongoing.
