Pine Hills to Break Ground on First OC Community Garden

Some feisty seniors of the Pine Hills Community Garden Club will see their desires move a little closer to reality when the first Orange County (OC) Community Garden breaks ground on Tuesday, August 17th.

Over one year ago, the seniors approached, Orange County Commissioner Tiffany Moore Russell, (District 6) about having a community garden.  Moore Russell obliged and a program was developed.  When the County announced early this year that grants would be available for citizens to start community gardens, these seniors quickly organized.

The group undertook training through Cooperative Extension, learned how to manage a garden organization and how to upkeep a garden. After completing the training, the group applied for a ReNEW grant which will fund the construction of the garden beds. The seniors will provide all the seeding and supplies for the garden.

The garden was made possible by the Mayor’s Residents & Neighborhoods Empowered to Win (ReNEW) grant program and by technical expertise from Orange County – UF/IFAS Extension Education Center.

Join Orange County Mayor Richard T. Crotty, Commissioner Tiffany Moore-Russell, District 6 and the Pine Hills Community Garden Club for the groundbreaking of Orange County’s very first community garden.
