Pill Mill Sweep Brings in Over 52,000 from Central Florida

Doctors turned over more than 105,000 pills during a sweep carried out Wednesday meant to check compliance with the state’s new pill mill law, the offices of Gov. Rick Scott and Attorney General Pam Bondi said Wednesday.  Most of the pills, more than 52,000 were taken out of Central Florida.

Checks of doctors’ offices were conducted by regional drug enforcement teams, and officials from the Department of Health and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

While South Florida has gotten much of the attention for being a pill mill haven, the most pills were taken out of Central Florida – more than 52,000.

Officials got about 48,000 pills out of doctors’ offices in South Florida.

The law prohibits doctors from dispensing certain controlled substances from their offices. A provision allowed seizure of pills with the declaration of a public health emergency, which happened Friday.
