The Men of the Gamma Delta Sigma Alumni Chapter and Iota Rho Collegiate Chapter, of the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity will host the 2014 Southern Region Service Project on January 10, 2014. The presentation will be held at the Rosen Plaza Hotel in Orlando at 5 pm.
This is the 10th year of the Jacket Project and it has expanded to winter jackets, suits, dresses, polo shirts, jeans, shoes, and accessories. The clothes are distributed through the Tangelo Park YMCA, Tiger Den at Jones HS, James R. Smith Neighborhood Center, and Holden Heights Community Center. We are currently collecting clothes for youth, elementary to high school, and drop boxes are at the following churches: Mt Sinai, Carter Tabernacle, St Mark AME, Mt. Olive AME, New Covenant MBC, Solid Rock United Methodist, Morning Glory, and Macedonia Baptist (Eatonville).
Phi Beta Sigma is a social/service collegiate and professional fraternity founded in 1914, to exemplify the ideas of Brotherhood, Scholarship, and Service. The Jacket Project was started in 1990, when coach/brother Greg Bird was driving in Orlando, and noticed several kids walking and shivering without jackets or coats. In conjunction with a crossing guard who knew most of the children, they began distributing jackets that were donated or bought. In 1994, it became an official service project for the local chapter of Gamma Delta Sigma.
This year we are excited to collaborate with the Central Florida Council of the Boy Scouts of America as a partner. Area troops will be collecting item for donations as well as helping in the distribution. This year our goal is to assist 1,000 children, and we need your help to make this endeavor a success.
