Troopers are investigating a crash on Saturday night on US Highway 17, south of Dover Lane in Volusia County, that killed a pedestrian as he crossed the road.
Florida Highway Patrol said, Ricky Simmons, 49, of Daytona Beach was heading southbound on the inside lane of US Highway 17 (State Road 15) at or near the speed limit when, John W. Mooney, 60, of Deland attempted to cross Highway 17. Mooney entered the inside southbound lane into the direct path of Simmons’ 2004 Isuzu. The left front corner of the Isuzu struck Mooney, who was pronounced dead on the spot. The crash occurred around 7:30 pm on Saturday, October 30th.
Simmons suffered no injuries as a result of the accident. A passenger in the vehicle, Charles Metress, 34, of Daytona Beach, also was not hurt as a result of the crash. Both were wearing seat belt.
Troopers are continuing with their investigation. They do not anticipate that any charges will be filed.
