It should come as no surprise. President Barack Obama is again meeting behind closed doors with Republican House Speaker John Boehner, hammering out a deal which would allow the debt ceiling to be raised by August 2 — a deal expected to contain draconian cuts that will fall squarely on children, the poor, seniors and the middle-class. And the wealthy? Perhaps down the road they may be asked to share in the sacrifice.
Forget Obama’s hollow claims of protecting Social Security and Medicare and his earlier argument that deficit reduction should be led by ending the Bush tax cuts and subsidies to big oil companies. He is getting set to have those who can least afford it, disproportionately bear even a heavier burden.
And Mr. Obama will say, he didn’t have a choice—America cannot afford to default on its debt–and all that that entails.
But Obama does have a choice.
