The community pressure against Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer’s gentrification of the historic Parramore neighborhood continues building as residents across the city are organizing and rallying together. This weekend, the Fight Back Coalition finished its first mass mailing to residents in Parramore, continued their door-to-door education campaign, and now have released another hard-hitting video against Dyer’s big spending and over-development.
On Friday, the group also held a Community Fish Fry with more than 50 people stopping by to share stories of the past, ideas to save Parramore and break bread with one another in an effort to strengthen the campaign to stop Dyer’s pet projects: Creative Village and a new $110+ million soccer stadium.
At the Fish Fry, residents were able to take materials on the gentrification that is occurring in Parramore, including a report card on the City of Orlando’s “Pathways for Parramore.” City officials claim progress over the last decade, while the reality in Parramore proves elected officials have neglected and exploited this area, including decimating housing, local business and failing to provide adequate safety.
This week, the Fight Back Coalition is releasing a new video calling out some of Orlando’s major financial obligations, full of Dyer’s pet projects. With no real local long-term funding plans secured and the fact that Mayor Dyer is dipping into city reserves to close budget holes, the group hopes to educate the community on Dyer’s reckless big spending and over-development.
The video, “A Rich Man’s Orlando (Buddy Dyer’s World),” tells the story of Orlando’s financial mess created under the Dyer administration. [http://youtu.be/Y1lev-5nvWE]
