Papa John’s boasts “Better Ingredients. Better Pizza. Papa John’s.” but this marketing slogan was turned on it head when an employee on Sunday, who felt he wasn’t properly tipped, unleashed an ugly racist tirade against the man to whom he had just delivered the pizza.
While the Papa John’s employee in Sanford (yes, that same Sanford where Travon Martin was shot and killed) has since been fired, he was caught on the phone mocking the man and his wife, accusing them of being terrible tippers and singing a racial-slur-filled song, after he butt-dialed the man.
“That’s the only requirement for being a n****r in Sanford,” says the voice in the message. “Yeah, they gave me five bucks there. Fine, outstanding African-American gentleman of the community.” Then he begins to sing.
The black couple, who was so offended, narrated what happened and filmed the voicemail, posting it on line.

Papa John’s CEO John Schnatter has since written a personal apology on the company’s Facebook page:
Friends, I am extremely concerned to learn about the reprehensible language used by two former employees in one of our restaurants. Their thinking and actions defy both my personal and the company’s values, and everything for which this company stands. The employees responsible for this absolutely unacceptable behavior were immediately terminated.
My heartfelt apology goes out to the customer involved, his family, and our community at large. I am very sorry that anyone would be exposed to these hurtful and painful words by any person involved in any way with our company.
Schnatter also pointed out that he had personally reached out to the customer to share his own thoughts and offer his deepest apology.
