Overturned Semi Crushes Mother, Toddler

The driver of a tractor trailer on State Road 60, who lost control near the entrance to the Turnpike in Osceola County, killed an Orlando mother and toddler in a Chevy pickup on Wednesday evening.

According to Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), Reynaldo Santos, 68, of Boca Raton was traveling westbound on State Road 60 in a tractor trailer on Wednesday evening when he attempted to turn to travel northbound onto the turnpike ramp. Santos lost control in the curve and the semi collided with a Chevy pickup traveling southbound, exiting the ramp from the turnpike.

In the Chevy pickup were the driver, Cassandra Green, 33, of Orlando and her two-year-old son, Steven Holtzapple.

Green was on the ramp in the left turn lane when the semi, driven by Santos, collided with the left side of her pickup.  The semi overturned onto the pickup trapping both Green and Holtzapple in their vehicle.

Green and her son died on the spot. She was wearing a seat-belt and her son also wore a child restraint.

Santos sustained minor injuries.

FHP said that alcohol did not play a role in the crash.

Charges are pending, FHP said.
