Commissioner Tony Ortiz (District 2) and the Youth Soccer Team will cut the ribbon Thursday, to officially open the new Engelwood Soccer Corral. At the event, Commissioner Tony Ortiz will also lace up in his own soccer cleats and kick off the District 2 team youth scrimmage.

The new 50’ x 80’ soccer corral was installed at the Engelwood Neighborhood Center through a partnership between District 2 Commissioner Tony Ortiz, Coca-Cola and the City of Orlando’s Families, Parks and Recreation Division (FPR). Coca-Cola donated $10,000 to the Orlando Community and Youth Trust, Inc. (OCYT) to assist in rebuilding the Engelwood Soccer Corral. The soccer corral features SportsGrass which is top of the line sports turf with unmatched realism. SportsGrass allows athletes to play at a higher level and has a natural feel with great durability.

“I am thankful for Commissioner Ortiz’s and Coca-Cola’s partnership and investment in our youth. Soccer is the fastest-growing sport in America with Orlando boasting the second highest youth participation in soccer in the country,” said Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer. “As we continue to work together to attract Major League Soccer it’s important to recognize that a world of soccer fans, and their economic impact, is at our front door.”

“It will be a day to remember,” said Commissioner Ortiz. “These are exciting times since our City is going through the soccer fever and we are partnering with Mayor Buddy Dyer to make sure that soccer becomes a reality in the City of Orlando! I am also grateful to Coca-Cola for helping us make improvements to the Engelwood Neighborhood Center’s Soccer Corral. Our children will now have a place to practice and play soccer.”

“We at Coca-Cola set a goal to inspire three million people to rediscover the joy and fun of being active this summer. We’re proud to support the Engelwood Neighborhood Center soccer corral as part of this effort and encourage residents to get outside and be active together,” said Marie Perry, Vice President of Sales, North Florida, Coca-Cola Refreshments. “We share an absolute belief that when we come together, real progress happens. Working with willing partners like Commissioner Tony Ortiz and the Orlando Community and Youth Trust is the best way to address critical issues – like obesity – affecting our community today.”

  1. $10,000 donation from Coke to do children’s soccer vs. tens of Millions of dollars for a downtown arena. Which is the priority for Commissioner Ortiz? Or the city?
