Orlando Students Upcycle Vinyl Banners into Works of Art

Orange County Public Schools and the City of Orlando partnered to celebrate Arts in Our Schools Month during the month of March. The Arts in Our Schools Month Banner Project features student artwork hanging on the streetlights of downtown Orlando.

School art programs received vinyl banners donated by the City of Orlando from previous downtown events and created a work of art inspired by a master artist. Visual art students designed and hand-painted the banners and then sealed them with a protectant to help preserve the work while exposed to the elements. The city’s Downtown Clean Team will install the newly reworked banners to display them along Orange Avenue and streets adjacent to the Dr. Phillips Performing Arts Center.

A walking tour guidebook includes pictures of each banner as well as information about the artists who influenced the students’ work. The guidebook can be found at AISM Banner Project Guidebook.
