West Creek Elementary School in Orlando was one of only two schools in Florida to win national recognition in a Fuel Up to Play 60 competition that helps kids exercise and eat a healthy diet that includes fat-free and low-fat dairy.
In addition, the Orange County school was one of 25 across the country that were runners-up to the grand prize winner. Each of the 25 schools received an Xbox 360 console with Kinect and a television.
The contest, FUTP 60’s Casting Call Challenge, encouraged students to upload a video, photo or essay that demonstrated how the nationwide in-school program inspired fitness and better nutrition at their school.
“Our students have grown with the program to really show pride, self-esteem and leadership skills,” said Iris Perez, Program Advisor at West Creek. The level of creativity has risen and test scores at our school are proven results [of Fuel Up to Play 60].” Bobby Sena, a fifth-grader at the school, is Florida’s Student Ambassador of the Year for Fuel Up to Play 60.
The other Florida school to be chosen as a runner-up was Theodore Roosevelt Elementary School in Cocoa Beach. The grand prize winner was Ridge Family Center for Learning in Elk Grove Village, Ill.
