Orlando Police Officer Involved in Shooting

police shooting_q13fox_3Orlando police are still searching for the driver who rammed a cop car on Friday night, causing an officer to shoot.

The incident happened at Clear Lake Park in the vicinity of 2301 West 29th Street, around 7:30 p.m.

Officer Stanley Avignon arrived at the location where he encountered a man moving around suspiciously inside a car, police said.  The man was ordered to get out of the vehicle, but didn’t comply.  Instead he shifted into reverse and attempted to hit Officer Avignon with his vehicle, causing the officer to discharge his firearm.

It is unknown how many shots were fired or if the man was hit.

The suspect then rammed his car into the officer’s vehicle before fleeing the scene, police also said.

The suspect is described as a black male, in his later 40s, with a bald head and scruffy beard.  The suspect’s car is believed to be an older model Buick or Oldsmobile, with some rear bumper damage.

An investigation into Officer Avignon’s shooting is underway and he has been place on routine administrative leave with pay.  He joined the force in February 2013.

Police continue to actively search for the suspect.
