Penton’s American City & County® magazine has selected Orlando, Florida, Mayor Buddy Dyer as its 2010 “Municipal Leader of the Year.” The magazine presents the award annually to recognize outstanding leadership in city government. A profile of Dyer and his contributions to Orlando is featured in the December issue of the magazine and is online at www.americancityandcounty.com.
* The Municipal Leader of the Year Award recognizes Dyer’s efforts to diversify Orlando’s economy and secure investment for high-speed rail in the Central Florida region. Under his leadership, the city is developing a Medical City research campus and a Creative Village, which will support digital media businesses in the urban core. It also opened the city-owned Amway Center, home of the Orlando Magic professional basketball team. As chair of the Central Florida Commuter Rail Commission, Dyer collaborated with area governments, businesses and civic organizations to secure local, state and federal funding for SunRail, Orlando’s first commuter rail system and a high-speed rail project from Orlando to Tampa, only of one of four such systems nationally.
“Mayor Dyer has the rare mix of vision, patience, persistence and ability to bring disparate parties together to lead central Florida past its primary income source, tourism,” said Bill Wolpin, editorial director for American City & County. “His contributions to Orlando and much of central Florida will be felt for generations.”
The subscribers of American City & County submit nominations for the Municipal Leader of the Year Award. The magazine’s editorial staff selects the award’s recipient each year.
