Orlando Man who Carjacked Wal-Mart Shopper, Arrested

A man who carjacked another man with a handgun, forcing him to drive to an ATM to withdraw money on Saturday, is now behind bars.

Michael A. Matson, 21, of Orlando, has been arrested, charged with multiple counts, including aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer with a motor vehicle, carjacking with a firearm and attempted murder.

Investigators said, just after 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, Matson walked up behind a man as he was putting groceries in his vehicle in the parking lot of Wal-Mart located at 600 Alafaya Trail.

Matson struck the man several times in his head with a handgun, then forced the victim into his vehicle, ordering him to drive to an ATM to withdraw money.

According to investigators, Matson made the victim drive back to Wal-Mart, but while on the way, the victim crashed the vehicle to get away.

Florida Highway Patrol spotted the man’s vehicle a short time later and pursued Matson.

Matson crashed the vehicle and was taken into custody, by troopers and Orange County Sheriff’s deputies.

The unnamed victim was transported to Florida Hospital East with non-life threatening injuries.

Investigators said, there were no injuries to citizens, deputies or troopers.

Matson has been charged with several counts, including armed kidnapping, aggravated assault with a firearm, attempted murder, carjacking with a firearm, aggravated fleeing and eluding a law enforcement, and battery on a law enforcement officer with a motor vehicle.
