Orlando Historic Preservation Calendar Contest Open

Sample of 2021 Historic Preservation Board Calendar winners

Do you want to submit an entry for the 2022 Historic Preservation Calendar? The City of Orlando Historic Preservation Board is counting on residents to make their photo submissions for the 2022 contest. This year’s theme will focus on historic windows and doors.

“We’re excited to announce the city’s 2022 Historic Preservation calendar photo contest!” the City of Orlando posted. “Windows and doors are important features on historic structures as they provide character, welcome residents home and invite patrons into businesses.”

To be eligible for the calendar, subject matter should be from structures that are at least 50 years old (generally, pre-1970) and be located within one of the city’s local historic districts, National Register of Historic Places districts, or a designated Orlando local landmark.

Photographs of Orlando’s historic windows and doors can be captured from the earliest Victorian houses and commercial buildings built in the 1880s to the Mid-Century Modern designs built in the 1960s. Windows and doors are important features on historic structures as they provide character and interest to a building or home. They welcome residents home and invite patrons into businesses. They can help identify an architectural style of a building as these features can be very distinctive such as the multi-paned windows of a Tudor Revival home to the large columned entryways of Mediterranean or Georgian Revival structures. Historic windows and doors are sometimes adorned with unique motifs, columns, framing, or decorative glass.

Submission subjects can be of individual windows or doors, the whole entry or window configuration, or an entire structure to show how these features are significant to the overall character of a structure. Exterior or interior images of the subject will be accepted.

Participants can submit up to three photographs. Residents must label the back with full name, daytime telephone number, email address and the address of the subject site. Send photographs to:

Historic Preservation Office (6th Floor), Orlando City Hall
P.O. Box 4990
400 South Orange Avenue
Orlando, FL 32802

Photographs must be black and white and printed on 8” x 10” or 8 ½” X 11” photo paper with a white border. Vertical or horizontal photographs are acceptable.

Submitted photographs become the property of the City of Orlando Historic Preservation Board for use in the annual calendar competition and associated promotions.

Photo submissions are due by July 30th.

A $100 honorarium will be awarded to each photographer whose picture is selected for the 2022 Historic Preservation Board Calendar, sponsored by McCoy Federal Credit Union. Winners will be notified by email. Winning photos will be selected by members of the Historic Preservation Board through blind judging.
