Orlando Gears Up for MLK 2015 Commemorative Events

Below is a list of the city of Orlando events this year.

Tuesday, January 13, 2015

10:00 a.m. Spread the Dream

Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, 445 South Magnolia Avenue

Presented by the African American Council of Christian Clergy in partnership with Florida A & M University College of Low, Orange County Public Schools and the Dr. Philips Center for the Performing Arts. This event is free.

This event will feature a civil rights educational presentation of the reenactment of Brown vs. Board of Education.

Thursday, January 15, 2015

6:30 p.m.  10th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Leadership Forum

Florida A & M University College of Law, 201 Beggs Avenue

Presented by Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity and FAMU Black Law Student Association.  This event is free.

The forum is a panel discussion focusing on issues of significance to the community and concepts addressed by Dr. King. This year’s theme is “Remember, Celebrate, Act:  King’s Dream of Economic Justice!”

11:30 a.m. 29th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Luncheon***

Ballroom at Church Street, 225 South Garland Avenue

Presented by Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity.  There is a cost for this event.

7:00 p.m. “City of Hope” Concert

Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church, 535 West Washington Street

Presented by the Negro Spiritual Scholarship Foundation.  This event is free.

This concert promotes a spirit of community with music and other offerings by artists and performers from across the City.

10:00 a.m. 31st Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade

Orange Avenue in Downtown Orlando

Presented by Southwest Orlando Jaycees.  This event is free.

This is a community parade to honor the legacy and life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and bring the message of unity to all people.

1:00 p.m. “The SOUND!” Praise Team Showcase and Competition

Lake Eola Amphitheater

Presented by Southwest Orlando Jaycees.  This event is free.

This musical showcase will feature Central Florida churches, residents and communities as they perform and compete before a panel of local celebrity judges to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

6:00 p.m. Recognition of Youth Humanitarian Award Winners

Amway Center, 400 West Church Street

Presented by the Orlando Magic.  There is a cost for this event.

Selected students from Orange County middle and high schools will receive the Youth Humanitarian award for exemplifying Dr. King’s ideals.

7:45 a.m. 24th Annual Arthur “Pappy” Kennedy Prayer Breakfast

First Baptist Church of Orlando, 3000 South John Young Parkway

Presented by YMCA of Central Florida & Southwest Orlando Jaycees.  There is a cost for this event.

9:00 a.m. Plant Seedlings for Civil Rights

Barker Park, 2000 Monte Carlo Trail

Presented by the Mayor’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission, Green-Up Orlando, Keep Orlando Beautiful & Green Works Orlando.  This event is free.

Volunteers will work in an effort to clean up and spruce up Barker Park and the surrounding neighborhood. Work will consist mostly of debris and litter removal along the roadside and medians.

9:00 a.m. Parramore Community Cleanup Service Project

Florida A & M University College of Law, 201 Beggs Avenue

Presented by FAMU Law School.  This event is free.

FAMU students and other volunteers will work on projects benefitting residents of the Parramore Community.

 9:00 a.m. MLK Commission House Painting

326 North Lee Avenue

Presented by the Mayor’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission.  This event is free.

Volunteers will work together to paint the house of Willie and Virginia Franklin, a local disabled couple who live in Parramore.

10:00 a.m. MLK South Street Jazz and Blue Cookout

John H. Jackson Community Center, 1002 Carter Street

Presented by Ski Hi Production, Inc. and PAST, Inc.  This event is free.

A day of family fun, entertainment, live music and BBQ to commemorate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the 50th Anniversary of the Civil Rights Act.

6:30 p.m. 15th Annual Youth Humanitarian Awards Ceremony and Banquet

Double Tree by Hilton at Downtown Orlando, 60 South Ivanhoe Boulevard

Presented by Mayor’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission.  There is a cost for this event.

The event honors middle and high school students selected for exemplifying the ideals embraced by Martin Luther King Jr.
