Orlando Boy Scout Troop set to Break World Record

WHAT: Picture a length of rope two miles long… with a square knot tied into about every two feet of the rope. Now, imagine tying all those knots in just 5 minutes.

With only 300 scouts, Orlando Boy Scout Troop 202, along with 10-12 other troops from the Little Econ District, intends to break a 2007 Guinness World Record set by 1,000 scouts, friends and family in Virginia for tying the World’s Longest Knotted Rope Chain.

300 scouts, adult leaders and their friends and families will start with three miles of rope, in order to finish with two miles of knotted rope in less than 5 minutes!

The rope was shipped to Orlando and arrived on Feb 17. Scoutmaster Mike McCleskey and other scout leaders began meeting on Feb 20 to cut the rope into lengths of 36 inches, to be completed by March 5. This is no easy task, pieces must be fused to prevent fraying. Although time-consuming, McCleskey said it’s worth it, because the pieces will later be donated to troops all over central Florida to use for future projects.

Troop 202, along with other scouts from the Little Econ District, plans to make the world record attempt during their Spring Camporee weekend on Saturday, March 6 from 1:30 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. at the Scout Ranch, a part of the Leonard and Marjorie Williams Family Scout Reservation, located in Paisley, FL.

WHO: SecureLine by Lehigh (http://www.lehighgroup.com/), located in Macungie, PA, the largest maker of rope, cord and twine in the U.S. has donated 3 miles of nylon rope for this exciting event.

“We’re thrilled to help Troop 202 and the other scouts in the Little Econ District achieve their goal. We wish them all the best in surpassing the world record,” said Deborah Hanson, SecureLine by Lehigh.
