Organizations March to Protest Orlando Gentrification

Community organizations will march at Orlando City Hall today, ahead of the June 17 council meeting, to protest the gentrification efforts underway in the Parramore area.

The Fight Back Coalition, National Action Network Central Florida Chapter, Believers Outreach Ministries, Women of Color Leadership Coalition and Edifying Love Ministries will join the growing community effort to stop gentrification in Orlando by holding a Jericho-style March. These community groups will join concerned Parramore residents to raise awareness of the gentrification cause by Creative Village and proposed projects like the new soccer stadium.

The Fight Back Coalition, The National Action Network Central Florida Chapter, Believers Outreach Ministries, Women of Color Leadership Coalition and Edifying Love Ministries will renew calls for Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer and the Orlando City Council to focus priorities back on the people of Parramore and to stop the destructive policies associated with the on-going gentrification.

“The purpose of a Jericho March is to pray for or against something and ask God to intercede, protect, or change something,” said Lawanna Gelzer, President of National Action Network Central Florida Chapter. “On June 17th, we are march against destructive policies that are destroying our community and we ask for divine guidance for our city leaders to believe in the people of Parramore and do what is right.”

Members from the group will also attend the City Council meeting at 2pm and speak on the record against the Creative Village and proposed soccer stadium. The Fight Back Coalition recently released a Community Report Card which awarded the City of Orlando an “F” on Parramore promises including housing, business development, children and education, public safety and transportation. Report cards will be distributed to elected officials at the meeting.
