Orange Students Named as Semifinalists in National Scholarship Program

Five students from Orange County Public Schools have been named as semifinalists in the 48th annual National Achievement Scholarship Program.

The students are:

Colonial High School
Olga Trejos-Kweyete

Edgewater High School
Sean Walden

Freedom High School
Cassandra Akanu
Amarise Little

Oak Ridge High School
Jerry Elie

The students were among 160,000 who took the 2010 preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Of the 160,000, only 1,600 became semifinalists determined by their preliminary SAT score.

The students are now eligible to continue in the competition for approximately 800 Achievement Scholarship awards worth more than $2.4 million to be offered next spring. They will be notified in January if they are finalists and able to compete academically for one of seven hundred $2,500 scholarships.

The National Achievement Scholarship Program, since 1964, has recognized and awarded academically- promising African-American students throughout the nation.
