Orange County’s Uninsured to have greater Access to Diagnostic Services

Some 75,000 uninsured patients enrolled in Orange County’s Primary Care Access Network (PCAN) might stand a better chance of accessing needed diagnostic services through a partnership with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida Foundation (BCBSF Foundation).

The BCBSF Foundation awarded Orange County Government/PCAN with a 2010 Impact Grant for two years to support a Diagnostic Coordinator.

The Diagnostics Coordinator will interface with area diagnostic vendors, assist patients with accessing diagnostic services in a timely manner and will closely case manage their care.  A coordinated effort in which patients have access to obtain the necessary testing at either a reduced cost or free, and are followed to ensure they receive it in a timely fashion will ultimately result in better health outcomes for the patient.

“We are pleased to support the important work of PCAN to improve health care access for people in need,” said Susan Towler, vice president of the BCBSF Foundation. “This added service will help patients achieve the best possible health outcome.”

“We now have approximately 75,000 uninsured patients enrolled in PCAN medical homes – and this has created a great need for diagnostic and secondary care,” said PCAN Chair Maureen Kersmarki. “The BCBSF grant will help us help our patients get the diagnostic services they need so that our specialty physicians can treat them more quickly and efficiently. We are very grateful to the Foundation.”
