Orange County Traffic Engineering Team Recognized for Emphasis on Pedestrian Safety

It’s not often that the Orlando area is recognized for pedestrian safety efforts. But the Orange County Traffic Engineering team is making Central Florida proud after being recognized by the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) for demonstrating an increased emphasis on pedestrian safety.

Orange County’s new initiative will add raised pedestrian crossings to all established school zone crossings and any new school zone crossings that meet USDOT Federal Highway Criteria. Eleven have been put in place so far.

The priority is to increase safety for pedestrians and bicyclists with an initial focus on children. Orange County plans to expand this initiative to assist other vulnerable people including the elderly and handicapped residents.
