The Orange County Regional History Center has received a 2023 Silver Award from the Southeastern Museums Conference for the special exhibition “Figurehead: Music & Mayhem in Orlando’s Underground,” as part of the organization’s annual Exhibition Competition showcasing the best in museums in the southeastern United States.
“We’re especially thrilled because competition officials noted that expectations were exceptionally high this year,” said executive director Pam Schwartz. “They received a record-breaking number of applications from a wide variety of museums across the region.”
According to to the History Center, Figurehead: Music & Mayhem in Orlando’s Underground, tells the story of how the company helped grow the local scene with a focus on underground rock music and the club circuit. The exhibition provides a glimpse into what made this time in the Orlando area so memorable – the bands and the clubs, the community and the chaos.
Orange County’s Figurehead exhibition has earned two major national awards including the 2023 American Association for State and Local History Winner Award of Excellence and a 2023 Gold Telly Award for the Orange TV series Scrapbook episode about the exhibition.
