Pollution prevention and sustainable practices are proactive approaches to maintain ecological balance, sustain the economy, and empower social stability. The objective of the pollution prevention calendar art contest is to connect art to science by encouraging high school students, grades 9th-12th, to think critically and to creatively communicate sustainable practices through art. Students are encouraged to utilize previously used items, items that can be reused, and/or communicate the importance of reusing and repurposing materials.
Art entries are still being accepted. The contest is opened to all Orange County 9th-12th grade students, accepting submissions in both 2-D and 3-D art forms. For more details and registration, visit www.ocfl.net/epd or contact Nancy Rodlun, Community Outreach Coordinator, at [email protected] or 407-836-1400. Entries will be collected at the Orange County Environmental Protection Division, 800 Mercy Drive, Ste 4, Orlando, FL 32808. Deadline for all entries is Friday, October 25, 2013 at 5 p.m.
Entries are judged on effectiveness and relevance to theme (40%), originality/creativity (30%), and quality of art (30%). The grand prize includes a membership and art class tuition to the Crealdé School of Art and a membership to Mennello Museum of American Art. Place prizes are sponsored by Art Systems of Florida, Orlando Museum of Art, the Central Florida Sierra Club and Orange Audubon Society. The winning entries will be featured in the 2015 Pollution Prevention (P2) Awareness calendar to be distributed during P2 Week 2014 (3rd full week in September). Schools whose students are selected for the calendar will be awarded a $100 Art Systems of Florida gift certificate.
