Orange County Deputy who was Shot, Identified

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office has identified the deputy sheriff who was shot in the back early on Wednesday morning.

The victim is Deputy Charlie Murphy, a six-year veteran of the Sheriff’s Office.

Although Deputy Murphy was off duty when he was shot by 39-year-old Eric Howell at a storage facility on L.B. McCleod Road, he is assigned to OCSO’s Sector 3 Patrol.

Deputy Murphy was shot in the back by Howell after a dispute ensued around 7:00 a.m.  He suffered non-life threatening injuries.

Orlando police say, both Howell and Deputy Murphy are known to each other.  Police also say, Howell is the father of a child by a woman known to both individuals.

The circumstances surrounding the dispute between the two men are unknown.

Howell has been charged with attempted first degree murder with a firearm, aggravated battery with a firearm and battery/domestic violence. He is expected to be booked into the Orange County Jail later today.
