Orange County Deputy Sheriff, Store Owner Honored in Awards Ceremony

An Orange County Deputy Sheriff was honored on Tuesday for his extraordinary courage, after being critically injured by a suspect last November.

Deputy First Class (DFC) Steven Cook received the Combat Award and the Purple Heart from Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings in a ceremony at the Orange County Sheriff’s Office Central Operations Complex today.

Deputy Cook was attacked and stabbed several times in the neck, by a suspect during a grand theft investigation of a store employee at a 7-eleven store on south Apopka Vineland Road. The store owner, Mr. Abdul Halim provided critical assistance to Deputy Cook at the time of the incident.

Deputy Cook, a 27-year-veteran, responded to the attack by firing several times killing Gibrean Flores Remigio, 25, on the spot.

Mr. Halim received the Sheriff’s Citation Medal for the assistance he rendered to Deputy Cook.
