Orange County Deputy Fires Round to Subdue Suicidal Man

A man who was threatening to commit suicide was eventually subdued by Orange County Sheriff’s deputies on Friday night in the 9100 block of Avenue A-Taft, but not before a deputy fired one round from his handgun.  The shot did not hit the suspect.

Deputies responded to a home in the 9100 block of Avenue A-Taft, following a 9-1-1 call around 7:04 pm, on Friday night, from a distraught woman who said her husband was threatening to commit suicide.

Deputies upon arrival made contact with a 29-year-old man who was uncooperative and extremely agitated.   Suddenly, deputies said, the man made a furtive, threatening movement with an object he had in his hand.  An Orange County deputy responded by firing one round from his handgun, but did not hit the suspect.

The man was taken into custody shortly after and transported to a hospital for further evaluation.

Deputies found evidence of a suicide attempt inside the home.  The object that the man held in his hand and pointed at the deputy turned out to be a cell phone.

The Sheriff’s office is investigating the incident.
